Will we see the Solid State Drives inside the new iPhones?

8GB is barely enough. It is indeed plenty for a phone and is the largest drive in a mobile phone to date. But this is still an iPod, among so many other things. iPhone fans are kind of split in two: some are happy flash memory is used for low power consumption and less weight, some are sad for loosing the 30 or 80GB of storage.

But do we need that much storage, anyway? Not really, if the phone internet connection is fast enough to stream your files straight from the Internet. As the EDGE is arguably fast enough to stream for media, Wi-fi is definitely good, if you have coverage. Few people could justify bigger storage if it wasn’t for media files.

CES 2007 brought us a new line of ultra fast Solid State Drives now. A big wow for SanDisk who launched a 32Gb HDD for “just” $600. I was really impressed about these two days ago. -Just to learn minutes after Apple announced the iPhone that Ritek announce their take on SSD: just $169 for the 16GB. 32GB and 64GB versions will be available by the end of 2006. This is a lot cheaper that the SanDisk, hopefully we will see them in the next generation of iPods, iPhone, as well as the OQO and Sony UX ultra portable computers.

So why all the buzz with SSD? It’s faster, doesn’t have moving parts, generates less heat, virtually zero noise, resists shocks and vibrations and consumes less power. Apple will not sell any iPhones for another five months. Maybe they are just taking their time to think about this, while waiting for the for the price to drop… ;-)))

In the meantime, why not drop in an DSDPA module in, too? ;-)
